AI search visibility study 2026: 3,906 AI answers
Our 2026 AI search visibility study of 3,906 answers: top-10 sites were named in AI Overviews 17 times as often as those outside the top 20; 57% went uncited.
QuQi's 2026 AI search visibility study checked 3,906 AI answers to real buyer questions: 922 Google AI Overviews (the AI summaries above Google's results) and 2,984 answers from Perplexity and from OpenAI's and Google's Gemini models given live web results. A business ranking in Google's top 10 was named in the AI Overview about 17 times as often as one outside the top 20, yet 57% of those top-10 pages were not among the overview's sources. The assistants named the business in 7 to 10% of their answers, and rarely agreed.
The data covers 21 business websites from late August to October 21, 2026, and shows what goes together, not what causes what.
Key findings of the 2026 AI search visibility study
- Google showed an AI Overview for 87.1% of the buyer keywords tracked (chosen by the businesses, so not all searches).
- When an AI Overview showed, it named the business in 10.2% of cases and listed one of its pages as a source in 6.5% (922 overviews).
- Businesses ranking in Google's top 10 were named in 64.9% of AI Overviews, about 17 times the 3.7% for businesses outside the top 20.
- Ranking was not enough: a top-10 business's page was missing from the AI Overview's sources 57.4% of the time (94 checks).
- YouTube was among the sources of 41% of AI Overviews that listed sources, Reddit of 15.6%.
- The AI assistants named the business in 7.4% to 9.5% of answers: Perplexity 9.5%, Gemini 7.6%, OpenAI's models 7.4%.
- The assistants rarely agreed: in the 82 cases where at least one named the business, 44% got the name from only one engine.
- When Google's AI Overview named the business, at least one assistant named it too in 40% of cases, against 11.2% when it did not (30 and 618 cases).
How often do AI Overviews show up for buyer questions?
AI Overviews showed for 87.1% of the 776 buyer keywords in the study at their latest check, and in 83.4% of all 1,105 checks. Businesses chose these keywords, mostly informational and commercial, so this is not the rate for all Google searches.
The kind of search matters. In a report published July 22, 2025, Pew Research Center found that 18% of the Google searches 900 US adults made in March 2025 produced an AI summary, but 60% of searches starting with a question word such as "what". BrightEdge put AI Overview presence at about 48% of its tracked queries in February 2026.
How often do AI Overviews cite websites?
AI Overviews listed their sources in 765 of the 922 overviews in the study, a median of 6 each (1 to 26); the other 157 listed none. The business whose buyers ask the question was named in the overview's text 10.2% of the time and listed as a source 6.5% of the time.
"Named" means the business's name, domain or brand appears in the answer text. "Linked" means one of its pages is among the answer's sources.
At least 47% of the AI Overviews cited a page that also ranked in the organic top 10 for the same search (matched by page title, so a floor).
Does ranking help you get into AI Overviews?
Ranking and being named in AI Overviews go together strongly. A business in Google's top 10 for a keyword was named in 64.9% of its AI Overviews (61 of 94), about 17 times the 3.7% rate outside the top 20.
| Business's organic position | Checks with an AI Overview | Business named | Business linked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | 18 (small sample) | 72.2% | 50.0% |
| 4 to 10 | 76 | 63.2% | 40.8% |
| 11 to 20 | 14 (small sample) | 21.4% | 14.3% |
| Not in the top 20 | 814 | 3.7% | 2.2% |
| Top 10 together | 94 | 64.9% | 42.6% |
Most businesses ranked poorly for their own buyers' questions: in 814 of 922 checks, they were outside the top 20. That mix is why the overall naming rate is only 10.2%.
This does not prove that ranking causes the mention. A business that ranks for a question has a page about it and may be better known for the topic; either could explain both.
Ranking is not enough
A top-10 ranking left the business's page out of the AI Overview's sources 57.4% of the time. Even in positions 1 to 3, the page was a source in only half of the 18 checks. BrightEdge reached the same conclusion in a February 12, 2026 report: a number one ranking does not automatically earn an AI Overview citation.
Other studies count per cited page. Ahrefs reported on March 2, 2026 that 37.9% of about 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10; BrightEdge put it at about 17%. Counted per overview, the top 10 shows up more often: one top-10 page among six sources is enough.
Which sites do AI Overviews and Perplexity cite most?
YouTube was the platform most often among AI Overview sources, in 41% of the 765 overviews that listed them, then Reddit at 15.6%. Perplexity, which cites a median of 19 sources per answer against 6 for an AI Overview, leaned on Reddit too (15.7%) but on YouTube in only 2.6%.
| Platform | AI Overviews citing it (of 765) | Perplexity answers citing it (of 995) |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 41% | 2.6% |
| 15.6% | 15.7% | |
| 7.5% | not reported | |
| 7.3% | 5.8% | |
| Wikipedia | 6.0% | 8.6% |
| Quora | 4.7% | not reported |
| Amazon | 3.4% | 6.3% |
| 2.7% | not reported | |
| Forbes | not reported | 2.5% |
A much larger study agrees. Peec AI's analysis of 30 million US sources, published March 31, 2026, ranked YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn and Medium as the domains AI Overviews cite most, and Reddit first for Perplexity.
How often do AI assistants name a business?
The AI assistants named the business in 7.4% to 9.5% of their answers. On every engine, more than nine answers in ten did not name it.
| Engine, as asked in the study | Answers judged | Business named |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity API (searches the web itself) | 995 | 9.5% |
| Gemini models, given five web results | 975 | 7.6% |
| OpenAI models, given five web results | 1,014 | 7.4% |
These are not the consumer apps. chatgpt.com and the Gemini app add memory, personalisation and their own retrieval, so these figures show how the models answer with web results, not exactly what a person sees.
Being a source is not being recommended
Perplexity used a business's page as a source without naming the business in 5.5% of its answers, and named a business without linking to it in only 0.7%. A page can inform an answer that never says who wrote it.
Do AI assistants agree on which business to name?
The AI assistants rarely agreed. Across 703 question-and-website pairs with a latest answer from all three engines, none named the business in 621 (88.3%). Of the 82 pairs where at least one did, 44% got the name from only one.
| Engines that named the business | Pairs | Share of 703 |
|---|---|---|
| None | 621 | 88.3% |
| One | 36 | 5.1% |
| Two | 29 | 4.1% |
| All three | 17 | 2.4% |
Checking one assistant tells you little about the others, and answers even change between runs: in a study published January 28, 2026, SparkToro's Rand Fishkin and Gumshoe's Patrick O'Donnell found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI gave the same brand list twice in repeated runs.
Does an AI Overview mention go with assistant mentions?
An AI Overview mention went with assistant mentions, in a small sample. Where a website tracked both a question and its keyword, at least one assistant named the business in 40% of the 30 pairs where the AI Overview named it, and in 11.2% of the 618 where it did not.
Ranking points the same way: at least one assistant named the business in 38.7% of the 31 pairs ranked 4 to 10, and in 10.5% of the 601 outside the top 20 (the top 3 had only 8 pairs, 4 named). Read these as a direction.
How we ran the study
The study used QuQi's AI Visibility records from late August to October 21, 2026, read-only, combined and anonymous: 21 business websites (20 also checked on the assistants), shops, service businesses and software, mostly in English, some in German, Romanian and Arabic. QuQi's own and four test websites were left out.
- Questions: the ones each website's buyers ask, from its Search Console, its rankings, its content plan, Google's "People also ask" and the owner's own list.
- Google: 776 keywords and 1,105 checks, 922 with an AI Overview, each read through a search data provider from the website's own country and language: the overview's text, its sources and the top 10 organic results.
- Assistants: 713 questions and 2,984 answers judged, from September 3. Perplexity was asked through its own API; the OpenAI and Gemini models through an API router (a service that passes requests on to many AI models), which added five live web results per question.
- Repeats: each question is asked again about weekly; the agreement and Google-versus-assistant figures use the latest answer per engine.
The limits: the OpenAI and Gemini answers are not the consumer apps; 21 websites is a small, self-selected group that chose its own keywords; small samples are marked. And the data shows what goes together, not that ranking or anything else causes a business to be named.
What to do with these AI search statistics in 2026
These AI search statistics point to six steps, on top of the basics in how to rank in ChatGPT and AI search. None guarantees a mention.
- Work on ranking first: 64.9% of top-10 businesses were named, 3.7% outside the top 20. Our guide to appearing in Google's AI Overviews covers the page work.
- Study the keywords where you rank but are not a source. Do the pages cited instead answer in their first lines, with facts and dates yours lacks? Check that your structured data matches the page.
- Be present where AI answers look. YouTube and Reddit are among the most cited sources, so a useful video or an honest community answer under your own name can reach answers your site does not. If a rival keeps getting named, read why ChatGPT recommends your competitor.
- Check every engine separately: with 44% of named cases coming from one engine alone, one test proves little. Here is how to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand, and the tools that automate it.
- Measure a share over weeks: the questions where you are named, week after week. Give AI visits their own line in analytics with our GA4 setup.
- Let the crawlers in. A page an engine's crawler is blocked from is unlikely to be a source, so check robots.txt and your firewall against our list of AI crawlers.
How QuQi helps
Every number here comes from the weekly checks of QuQi's AI Visibility teammate. For each website, it asks Google's AI Overview, Perplexity, OpenAI's models and Gemini the questions its buyers ask, records who is named instead, and turns each gap into a brief for the Copywriter, who writes and publishes the article. Every batch runs in a chat the owner can open, and one switch per kind of work decides whether it waits for an OK. No one can promise a mention, QuQi included. See pricing.
Questions people ask
How often do AI Overviews show up in 2026?
For buyer questions, very often. In QuQi's 2026 study, Google showed an AI Overview for 87.1% of 776 keywords that 21 businesses track. Broader samples show less: Pew Research Center counted 18% of US Google searches in March 2025, and BrightEdge about 48% of its tracked queries in February 2026.
How often do AI Overviews cite websites?
Most AI Overviews cite several websites. In QuQi's 2026 study, 765 of 922 overviews listed sources, a median of 6 each and up to 26; the other 157 listed none. The business behind the buyer's question was among those sources in only 6.5% of overviews.
Does ranking help you get into AI Overviews?
Yes, ranking goes with it strongly. In QuQi's study, businesses in Google's top 10 for a keyword were named in 64.9% of its AI Overviews, against 3.7% for businesses outside the top 20, about 17 times as often. The data shows the two go together; it does not prove that ranking causes the mention.
Why does my page rank but not appear in the AI Overview?
That is common. In QuQi's study, a business ranking in the top 10 was missing from the AI Overview's sources 57.4% of the time, and even pages in positions 1 to 3 were a source in only half the checks. Compare your page with the ones Google cites instead, starting with how directly they answer.
What are the most cited sites in AI Overviews?
YouTube, then Reddit. In QuQi's 2026 study, YouTube appeared among the sources of 41% of AI Overviews that listed sources, Reddit 15.6%, Facebook 7.5%, LinkedIn 7.3% and Wikipedia 6.0%. Peec AI's March 2026 analysis of 30 million US sources ranked the same first four for AI Overviews, with Medium fifth.
How often does ChatGPT mention a business?
In fewer than one answer in ten, in QuQi's data. OpenAI's models, given five live web results through an API, named the business in 7.4% of 1,014 answers to its buyers' questions. The chatgpt.com app adds memory, personalisation and its own retrieval, so a person there may see different answers.
Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini give the same answers?
Rarely. Across 703 question-and-website pairs answered by all three engines in QuQi's study, all three named the business in only 17 (2.4%). Of the 82 pairs where at least one engine named it, 44% were named by one engine alone, so one assistant says little about the others.
