How to appear in AI Overviews in 2026

To appear in Google's AI Overviews in 2026, a page must be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and on a site that hasn't opted out of AI features in Search Console. Google says nothing more is required: no special markup and no AI text files. Whether your page gets picked then depends on how well it answers the question and the related searches Google runs behind the answer.

This guide sticks to Google. For ChatGPT and other assistants, read how to rank in ChatGPT and AI search; for Google's October 15 link changes, see our post on the AI Mode links update.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results pages, with links to the pages that support them. Google says they show only when its systems decide they are "additive to classic Search", so many searches have none.

At I/O on May 19, 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users. Google's help page lists them in more than 200 countries and territories and nearly 100 languages.

What Google says it takes to appear in AI Overviews

Google says a page needs three things to be eligible for AI Overviews in 2026: it must be indexed, it must be eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and its site must be included in Search Console's Search generative AI setting, which is on by default. No special optimization is needed beyond that.

That comes from Google's AI features page and its guide to generative AI features, last updated July 10, 2026, which calls optimizing for AI search "still SEO". Both add that meeting every requirement doesn't guarantee a page is shown.

How does Google choose AI Overview sources?

Google chooses AI Overview sources with its regular ranking systems. It retrieves pages from the Search index, reads the relevant parts and writes an answer grounded in them, with links to the pages that back it up. Google calls this retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding.

Query fan-out

Query fan-out means Google runs several related searches at once to build one answer. Its own example: for "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds", fan-out searches might include "best herbicides for lawns" and "remove weeds without chemicals". A page can earn a link by being the best result for one side question, even if it doesn't rank for the original search.

Passages, not whole pages

Google can link to the part of a page that answers. Its ranking systems include a passage ranking system that identifies individual sections, and its AI guide says it can show the relevant piece of a page covering several topics. A clear answer under a matching heading gives it something specific to point to.

What the data shows about rankings

In a March 2026 Ahrefs study of 863,000 searches and 4 million AI Overview links, about 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for that search, 31% ranked 11 to 100, and 31% ranked lower. Ahrefs measured 76% in July 2025, but its method changed, so that isn't a clean trend. It points to fan-out as the likely cause. YouTube supplied 5.6% of cited links.

Citations also move: Ahrefs reported in December 2025 that 45% of AI Overview citations change from one generation of an answer to the next.

Which searches show AI Overviews?

AI Overviews mostly show on searches with no single right answer: longer and question-style searches. Google's Ads help says they trigger on "no one right answer" queries, such as complex ones that benefit from several sources.

Pew Research Center's study of US browsing in March 2025 gives the clearest breakdown. About 18% of searches produced an AI summary, rising to 60% for searches starting with who, what, when or why, and 53% for searches of 10 words or more. Only 8% of one- or two-word searches did.

The share has grown. Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch on July 27, 2026 put AI Overviews on 43% of searches, up from 15% a year earlier, though the article gives no method. Semrush tracked over 600,000 US desktop keywords from November 2025 to April 2026: AI Overviews on commercial-intent results rose 71% on average, while the share of transactional results with one fell 5%.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what's the difference?

AI Mode is Google's separate, conversational search: you ask a question, get a longer answer with links, and keep asking follow-ups. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so they often link to different pages.

FeatureAI OverviewsAI Mode
Where it showsTop of a normal results page, when Google decides it helpsA mode the searcher opens, or reaches with a follow-up from an AI Overview
AnswerA short summaryAbout four times longer, in Ahrefs' data
Finding sourcesMay use query fan-outSplits the question into subtopics and searches each at once
Monthly users, per Google in 2026Over 2.5 billionOver 1 billion
In Search ConsoleWeb search type; every link shares the overview's positionWeb search type; a follow-up counts as a new search

The overlap is small. In September 2025 US data on 540,000 searches that produced both, Ahrefs found only 13.7% of cited URLs in both answers, though in about nine of ten cases the two said much the same thing. Since May 19, 2026, Google says, people can ask a follow-up from an AI Overview and carry on in AI Mode, on desktop and mobile worldwide. Treat them as two chances to be cited.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks? What studies found up to 2026

AI Overviews reduce clicks on average, though studies disagree on how much. All three studies below find fewer clicks on regular results when one appears, while Google says the clicks that remain are "higher quality", with people spending more time on the site.

Seer warns that stronger brands are more likely to be cited anyway, so the citation gap shows correlation, not cause. For Google, Nick Fox, its SVP of Knowledge and Information, wrote on July 17, 2026 that AI features send "billions of clicks to websites every week", without a comparison to earlier years.

How to see AI Overview impressions and clicks in Search Console

Search Console shows AI Overview impressions in its Generative AI performance report, but not clicks. Google launched the report for some sites on June 3, 2026 and opened it to every site on August 31. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in the regular Performance report, mixed with every other Web result.

The report's help page lists impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It has no queries and no dimension that separates the two features. In the main Performance report, an AI Overview takes one position and every link in it gets that position, so the fifth link reports the same spot as the first.

To estimate the effect, export the Pages table from the AI report for the last three months, then check the same pages' clicks and click-through rate in the Performance report. A page with rising AI impressions and falling clicks is probably being read in the answer rather than visited: give readers a reason to come, like a full price list, a calculator or a booking form.

How to appear in AI Overviews: a 2026 checklist

To appear in AI Overviews, first clear the settings that can block you outright, then improve the pages that answer questions, then measure. The SEO basics for 2026 sit underneath all of it.

  1. In Search Console, open Settings, then Search generative AI, and confirm the site is included.
  2. Run URL Inspection on your ten most valuable pages. Each should be indexed, with the canonical you expect, no nosnippet or max-snippet:0 rule, and no data-nosnippet around its main answer.
  3. Check that robots.txt and your host's bot protection let Googlebot through.
  4. In the Performance report, add a query filter, choose Custom (regex), enter ^(how|what|why|which|when|where|who|can|does|is|are)\s and sort by impressions to find the questions you already rank for.
  5. Search the top 20 on Google. Note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links. Repeat a week later, since citations change.
  6. Rewrite each answer page's opening: two or three sentences that answer plainly, then the detail, under headings that read like real questions.
  7. Add what only you know: prices, timings, service areas, test results, your own photos. Google calls this "non-commodity content" and says it will likely matter more over time than anything else in its guide.
  8. Answer the obvious follow-up questions on the same page or a linked one, not a new page for every variation.
  9. Update your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center feed, and keep structured data matching the page.
  10. Each month, compare AI impressions, clicks and what those visitors do next.

How QuQi helps

Step five is the easiest to let slide. QuQi's AI Visibility teammate does it every week: it checks whether Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name your business for the questions your buyers ask, and records who is named instead. Each gap becomes a brief for the Copywriter, who researches it, writes the article in your voice and publishes it.

The SEO Auditor puts what costs the most traffic first, and the Page Optimizer writes fixes for titles, descriptions and structured data. When you connect Search Console, QuQi reads it. Every batch runs in a chat you can step into, and one switch per kind of work decides whether it goes out on its own or waits for your OK. QuQi doesn't promise citations. See pricing.

Questions people ask

Why is my site not showing in AI Overviews?

Usually one of four reasons: the page isn't indexed or can't show a snippet, the site is excluded under Search generative AI in Search Console, the search doesn't trigger an AI Overview, or another page answers the question or its fan-out searches better. Check the first two with URL Inspection and the Settings page.

Do you need to rank on page one to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Ahrefs found in March 2026 that about 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for that search, and about 31% ranked below position 100. Google runs related fan-out searches, so a page can be cited for a side question. Rankings still count, since Google picks sources with its core ranking systems.

Does schema markup help you appear in AI Overviews in 2026?

Not directly. Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It still recommends structured data for rich results, as long as it matches the visible text. FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026, so FAQ markup no longer earns a special display either.

Can I see clicks from AI Overviews in Search Console?

Not separately. As of October 2026, the Generative AI performance report shows impressions only, by page, country, device and date. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the regular Performance report under the Web search type, mixed with other results. Compare the same pages in both reports to estimate the effect.

Can you opt out of AI Overviews as a website owner?

Yes. Since August 31, 2026, every site has a Search generative AI control in Search Console settings. Excluding a site removes it from AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, generally within a few days, and it gets no traffic or impressions from them. For a single page, the nosnippet rule stops its content being used as a direct input.

Can you pay to appear in AI Overviews?

Not as a cited source; those come from Google's ranking systems. Ads are separate: they can show above and below AI Overviews in every market where they run, and inside them in English in 12 countries, including the US, Canada and Australia. An ad buys a placement next to the answer, not a mention in it.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

It depends on how quickly Google recrawls the page. Google says crawling can take from several days to several months, and you can request a recrawl with URL Inspection. After that, a page is only cited when it answers a search well, so judge changes over months and check the same questions repeatedly.
