SEO vs AEO vs GEO in 2026: what each term means

SEO (search engine optimization) earns your pages a place in search results, AEO (answer engine optimization) makes your page the one answer a search box or assistant gives, and GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business cited in answers written by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. In 2026 the three share most of their work: Google calls AEO and GEO "still SEO", and a small business can treat them as one job checked in three places.

LLMO, AIO and AI SEO are newer labels for roughly the same aim as GEO. For a closer look at GEO alone, read our guide to generative engine optimization.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what each term means

SEO, AEO and GEO each name a place to be found: a list of search results, a single direct answer, or an answer an AI writes with its sources.

What is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work of making pages that search engines can crawl, index and rank, so people find and click them. The phrase dates to 1997. Search journalist Danny Sullivan traced the earliest uses he could find to a meta tag that May and a newsgroup sales pitch that July. Who said it first is unsettled.

What is AEO?

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of shaping content so a system that gives one answer picks yours: a featured snippet, a voice assistant reading a reply aloud, or an AI assistant. AEO is older than ChatGPT. Jason Barnard, who runs the brand search company Kalicube, says he coined it in 2017, when featured snippets began pushing the ten blue links down the page.

That date comes from Barnard's own company, and no independent record confirms it. His talk in Paris on March 23, 2018, titled "Answer Engine Optimisation", shows the term was in use by then.

What is GEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your content cited, quoted or named in answers that an AI writes from several sources. The name comes from a research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", first posted on November 16, 2023 by a team including researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi, and accepted at the KDD 2024 conference.

The paper called tools like Bing Chat, Google's Search Generative Experience and Perplexity "generative engines". In May 2025 the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz put the term in the title of an essay on how GEO "rewrites the rules of search".

What is LLMO?

LLMO, or large language model optimization, means improving how often and how accurately chatbots built on large language models mention your business. Glossaries such as Conductor's treat it as essentially a synonym for GEO, focused on the model rather than the search engine. Nobody has a documented claim to coining LLMO, though Adobe's LLM Optimizer, previewed in June 2025, carries the idea in its name.

What do AIO and AI SEO mean?

AIO can stand for AI optimization, another catch-all for the same work. SEO trade press also uses "AIO" as short for Google's AI Overviews, so "optimizing for AIO" can mean one Google feature or every AI tool. AI SEO is the loosest label: SEO with AI search in mind, or SEO done with AI tools, depending on who says it.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO compared in one table

The five labels differ less in the work than in where you look for the result.

AEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

AEO and GEO differ mostly in their history: AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search, while GEO was named for AI tools that write answers from several sources. In 2026 many people use the two as synonyms. Profound, an AI search analytics company, argued in June 2025 that they are "two names, one strategy".

Microsoft draws a line anyway. Its advertiser guide "From discovery to influence: A guide to AEO and GEO", reported in January 2026, defines AEO (which it expands as answer or agentic engine optimization) as helping AI assistants "find, understand, and present answers". It defines GEO as making content "discoverable, trustworthy, and authoritative" in generative search.

Microsoft's example is a rain jacket. The SEO version is a keyword, "waterproof rain jacket". The AEO version adds precise features: lightweight, packable, ventilated seams. The GEO version adds proof: a magazine's rating, a 180-day returns policy and a 4.8-star score.

AEO makes the answer easy to lift; GEO makes it worth trusting. Neither works on a page search engines cannot find.

Is GEO replacing SEO in 2026?

GEO is not replacing SEO in 2026. Google's guide to its generative AI features, published in May 2026 and last updated on July 10, says AI Overviews and AI Mode are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems". From Google's side, it says, optimizing for AI search is "still SEO".

Microsoft's guide also calls traditional SEO essential, since AI systems run live web searches throughout a buyer's research. Forrester analyst Nikhil Lai put it plainly in a November 2025 post: "AEO is significantly, but not fundamentally, different from SEO." He grouped AEO, GEO, AIO and LLMO as buzzwords and argued that vendors exaggerate the gap to sell new tools.

Google's guide covers Google's own AI features, not ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, which find pages with their own crawlers. Also, a page can now shape an answer without anyone clicking, so clicks alone no longer tell you how you're doing. For the other assistants, see how to rank in ChatGPT and AI search.

How much of the work is shared?

Most of the work behind SEO, AEO and GEO is shared. Google's guide says unique, useful content will likely do more for a site's place in AI search than anything else it suggests. Work that counts for all three:

  • Let search engines and AI search crawlers reach your pages. Our list of AI crawlers names each one.
  • Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences, under a heading phrased the way people ask.
  • Publish facts only you can state, such as prices, service areas and delivery times, and update them when they change.
  • Keep your name, address, hours and description identical on your site, your Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Add structured data that matches what the page shows. Our guide to schema markup for AI search goes further.

What actually differs

Where you check results differs most. SEO has Search Console's Performance report, with clicks and positions. For Google's AI features, its Generative AI performance report, launched on June 3, 2026 and open to every site since August 31, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, but no clicks.

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, in public preview since February 10, 2026, counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. Microsoft called it "an early step toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tooling". For ChatGPT and Perplexity, put your buyers' questions to them and note who is named (here's how to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand).

Other sites' words weigh more in AI answers. In a May 2025 Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, mentions of a brand across the web correlated with how often AI Overviews named it at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. That is correlation, not proof, but it helps explain why ChatGPT may recommend your competitor.

Old ranking tricks carry over badly. In the 2023 GEO paper's tests, adding quotations, statistics or cited sources raised a source's visibility in AI answers by 30 to 40%, while keyword stuffing did worse than leaving the page alone. Sources ranked fifth in search gained the most. Those were lab tests on 2023 systems: a direction, not a recipe.

Google also lists AI tactics you can skip for its Search: llms.txt files, cutting pages into small chunks, rewriting for AI and chasing inauthentic mentions. For the file itself, see what llms.txt is.

Which one should a small business focus on in 2026?

A small business should focus on SEO in 2026, written the AEO way and checked the GEO way. That is one plan with three checks, not three budgets:

  1. Fix the basics. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in its AI features, so start with indexing problems and slow pages on phones.
  2. Rewrite your ten most valuable pages so the answer comes first, and add one fact only you can give. Our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews shows how.
  3. Earn honest mentions: reviews on the platforms AI answers cite for your trade, and checkable facts for comparison writers.
  4. Check once a month: both Search Console reports, Bing's AI Performance report, and 20 buyer questions put to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Give AI visits their own channel in GA4 too.
  5. Question anyone selling GEO as a separate trick. Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Ask what will change on your site and how it will be measured.

How QuQi helps

QuQi's crew of AI agents treats SEO, AEO and GEO as one job. The SEO Auditor puts what costs your site the most traffic first and tells the Page Optimizer what to fix: titles, descriptions and structured data, the most valuable pages first.

AI Visibility checks every week whether Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name your business for your buyers' questions, records who is named instead and turns each gap into a brief for the Copywriter. Every batch runs in a chat you can open and step into, and one switch per kind of work decides whether it goes out on its own or waits for your OK. QuQi can't promise rankings or citations. Questions people ask

What do SEO, AEO and GEO stand for?

SEO stands for search engine optimization, AEO for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization. SEO aims at search rankings, AEO at being the one answer a snippet or assistant gives, and GEO at being cited in AI-written answers. Microsoft also expands AEO as agentic engine optimization, for AI agents that act for a user.

What is AEO in marketing?

AEO in marketing is shaping your content so answer engines pick it as the reply: featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat tools. In practice that means question-style headings, a direct answer in the first lines and plain facts. Jason Barnard of Kalicube says he coined the term in 2017, years before ChatGPT, and he gave a talk under that name in March 2018.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. Many people use the terms interchangeably in 2026, and the work overlaps. The difference is emphasis: AEO is about making an answer easy to extract, GEO about being trusted enough to be cited. Microsoft's advertiser guide, reported in January 2026, keeps them apart, while Google calls both "still SEO" for its own search.

What does LLMO mean?

LLMO means large language model optimization: making chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude mention your business more often and describe it accurately. Most glossaries treat it as a near-synonym for GEO. No one has a documented claim to inventing the term, and Google, Microsoft and the 2023 research paper all use GEO or AEO instead.

What does AIO mean in SEO?

AIO means two different things in SEO. Some use it for AI optimization, a catch-all for being visible in AI search. Others, including SEO trade press, use AIO as short for Google's AI Overviews, the AI summaries at the top of results. Before you hire anyone for AIO work, ask which of the two they mean.

Does GEO replace SEO in 2026?

No. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on its core ranking systems, and a page Google hasn't indexed can't appear in them at all. GEO adds checks on top: whether AI tools name you, which crawlers can reach your site, and what other sites say about you. The basic SEO work stays.

How do you measure AEO and GEO in 2026?

Use three sources. Search Console's Generative AI performance report, open to all sites since August 31, 2026, counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts citations in Copilot. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask your buyers' questions monthly and record who is named, since answers change from run to run.
