Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor in 2026?
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor? Usually other sites vouch for them, its crawler can read them and their facts are current. How to check and fix it.
ChatGPT recommends a competitor instead of you when the pages it reads make that competitor the safer answer to your buyer's question. In 2026 the usual causes are other sites naming them and not you, a site ChatGPT's crawler can't read, facts about you that are missing, inconsistent or old, and a model trained before you were known. Nobody can buy that recommendation, but each cause can be checked and fixed.

How does ChatGPT choose which brands to recommend in 2026?
ChatGPT chooses brands from two sources: what its model learned in training, and what a live web search returns when someone asks. OpenAI says it ranks search results "using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information", and that placement is not guaranteed.
OpenAI's help page on web search, updated in October 2026, adds:
- ChatGPT may search on its own when a question "would benefit from current information". Otherwise it answers from what the model already knows.
- It rewrites the question into targeted queries for search partners, then may send narrower follow-ups. The page links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for those partners.
- It may shape those queries with your approximate location and, when memory is on, your saved memories.
- Pages reach it through OpenAI's crawler,
OAI-SearchBot. Sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", according to OpenAI's crawler documentation.
For products, OpenAI's shopping help page lists structured data from merchants and third parties, other third-party content, and the model's own answer before it considers new search results. Its example weighs price and reviews.
Money isn't on that list. OpenAI has tested ads in ChatGPT since February 9, 2026, and its ads announcement says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you". An ad buys a labelled slot beside the answer, not a place in it.
Does ChatGPT always recommend the same brands?
No. ChatGPT's brand recommendations change from one run to the next, so confirm the gap before you fix anything. In a SparkToro study published January 28, 2026, ChatGPT gave the same list of brands less than once in 100 runs, though how often each brand appeared held much steadier.
Ask your buyers' questions several times in a temporary chat set to Unpersonalized, which uses no memory or custom instructions, and count the share of answers that name you and your competitor. Our guide to checking ChatGPT mentions has the full method.
Why is ChatGPT not recommending my business? Six causes
ChatGPT usually leaves a business out for one of six reasons: its crawler can't read your site, other sites name competitors instead, your business is described inconsistently, no page answers the buyer's question, your facts are stale, or the answer came from training data. Often several apply; start with the first.
1. ChatGPT can't find or read your site
ChatGPT can't recommend pages its crawler can't reach. OpenAI says a site is eligible for ChatGPT search when it allows OAI-SearchBot and its host or CDN accepts OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses. Three things can get in the way:
- A robots.txt rule that blocks
OAI-SearchBot, sometimes added by someone who only meant to keep outGPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler. - CDN bot settings. Since September 15, 2026, domains newly added to Cloudflare block agent bots, which fetch pages for chat users, on pages with ads by default, while search crawlers stay allowed.
- Text that only appears after JavaScript runs. Vercel's December 2024 tests found none of the major AI crawlers, OpenAI's included, rendered JavaScript. OpenAI hasn't said whether that changed.
To check, read yoursite.com/robots.txt, search your server logs for OAI-SearchBot, and load a key page with JavaScript off. OpenAI's help page lists Microsoft's privacy statement for its search partners, so confirm in Bing Webmaster Tools that Bing has indexed your main pages.
To fix it, allow OAI-SearchBot (you can still block GPTBot), let OpenAI's IP ranges through, and put key facts in the HTML as text. Our list of AI crawlers has every name to check.
2. Other sites name your competitor, not you
Third-party pages shape many ChatGPT recommendations. In an Ahrefs study from December 2025 of 750 early research prompts about software, products and agencies, "best X" blog lists made up 43.8% of the pages ChatGPT cited. Brands ranked higher on those lists tended to be the ones recommended.
The mix shifts. Across more than 2 million ChatGPT citations, Seer Interactive saw lists' share slip from 17.8% to 15.5% between November 2025 and January 2026, while Wikipedia, Reddit, review sites and news sites gained in its data. Then, in mid-August 2026, Reddit's share of ChatGPT search citations fell from 3.83% to 0.52% in Promptwatch's provisional data, for reasons nobody has confirmed.
To check, open Sources on an answer that names your competitor and note each third-party page. Are you on it, and how high?
To fix it, send list authors facts they can verify, ask customers for reviews on the platforms ChatGPT cites, and answer forum questions under your own name. Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guideline strongly discourages editing your own company's article; propose changes on its talk page. Ranking yourself first in your own "best X" list is disputed: Ahrefs recommends it to software firms and agencies, while Peec AI's March 2026 analysis found ChatGPT cited such lists about a third as often as Perplexity and Google's AI Mode.
3. Your business is described differently in different places
ChatGPT has to work out which business a page is about. If your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page and directory listings give different names, categories or cities, the evidence about you splits. Microsoft's Bing team advises aligning text, images and video "so they consistently represent the same entities".
To check, ask ChatGPT in an unpersonalized chat what your business is and who it's for. Watch for an old name, the wrong category or city, or a mix-up with a similarly named company.
To fix it, use one name and one sentence on what you do, with the same address, phone number and hours everywhere, Bing Places included. Add Organization structured data with sameAs links to your official profiles. Google says some of that markup's properties are used to "disambiguate your organization from other organizations".
4. You have no page for the buyer's question
ChatGPT can only cite a page that matches the query it actually searched. OpenAI's help page shows a question rewritten into a targeted search, then a narrower follow-up; Google calls its version query fan-out. A competitor with a page for that exact need gives the search something to find.
Buyers ask narrow questions: an accountant for freelancers in Leeds, a CRM that works with WhatsApp. To check, find the page on your site that answers each missing question in its first lines. Often there is none: no prices, no use-case page, no comparison, no page for your area.
To fix it, write one page per real buyer question, answer it first, and state facts only you can give, such as prices and service area, as text.
5. Your facts are out of date
AI assistants tend to cite fresher pages. In a July 2025 Ahrefs study of about 17 million citations, the pages AI assistants cited were 25.7% fresher on average than Google's organic results, and ChatGPT's were the freshest. In Ahrefs' December 2025 study, 79.1% of the lists ChatGPT cited had been updated that year.
To check, look for old prices, hours, products or names in ChatGPT's answers, and for key pages with no date.
To fix it, update and date pages when facts change. Bing recommends IndexNow to signal changes, and Search Console takes recrawl requests. Shopify merchants' products already reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and other shops can apply to send OpenAI a product feed.
6. ChatGPT answered from training data
Some ChatGPT answers come from the model alone, with no search, and a model only knows what it learned before its knowledge cutoff, the date its training data ends. In October 2026, OpenAI's model catalog lists April 30, 2026 for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. A business that launched or rebranded later is missing from what they learned.
To check, see whether the answer cites any sources. If you appear only when Search is on, the gap is in the training data.
To fix it, win the search route with causes 1 to 5, and build the mentions later models may learn from. Mind one trade-off: OpenAI says disallowing GPTBot signals that your content shouldn't be used for training, so future models would learn about you mainly from other sites.
ChatGPT not recommending my business: symptoms and fixes
When ChatGPT isn't recommending your business, its answer usually shows why. Match the symptom to the cause.
| What you see | Likely cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Named in some runs, not others | Normal variation | Same question 20 or more times, unpersonalized | Track your share of answers monthly |
| Never cited, even for your own name | Crawler blocked | robots.txt, server logs, CDN settings | Allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's IPs |
| Prices or services described wrongly | Facts hidden in scripts or images, or old | Page with JavaScript off; its date | Facts as HTML text; update and date pages |
| Cited "best X" lists and review sites skip you | Third-party gap | Open Sources, check each page | Earn places on those pages |
| Confused with another company, or an old name | Inconsistent description | Ask what your business is, unpersonalized | One name and description everywhere |
| A competitor's page cited for a specific need | No page for that question | Look for a page of yours that answers it | Write that page |
| No sources in the answer, and you're absent | Training data | Ask again with Search on | Win the search route; build mentions |
| Products missing from shopping results, or old prices | Product data | Compare ChatGPT's listing with your store | Shopify Catalog or OpenAI's product feed |
Do Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews work the same way?
Mostly, yes. Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews leave businesses out for the same reasons as ChatGPT: third-party gaps, blocked crawlers, inconsistent or stale facts and missing pages. What differs is how each one finds pages.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode need an indexed page that is eligible for a snippet. Google also asks you to keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current. See how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
- Google's
Google-Extendedsetting decides whether the Gemini app may ground answers in your pages. It doesn't affect Google Search. - Perplexity finds pages with
PerplexityBot.
How QuQi helps
The hard part is repeating this diagnosis. QuQi's AI Visibility teammate asks Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini your buyers' questions every week and records who is named when you aren't. Each gap becomes a brief for the Copywriter, who researches it and writes and publishes the article in your voice.
The SEO Auditor audits the site and puts what costs the most traffic first, and the Page Optimizer writes fixes for titles, descriptions and structured data on the pages the audit flags. Every batch runs in a chat you can step into, and one switch per kind of work decides whether it goes out alone or waits for your OK. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation, QuQi included. Questions people ask
Why is ChatGPT not recommending my business in 2026?
Usually because other sites don't mention you, ChatGPT's crawler can't read your pages, or your facts are thin, inconsistent or out of date. It may also be answering from training data that predates you. Test many times in an unpersonalized chat first, since its lists change between answers.
Where does ChatGPT get its recommendations?
From its training data and, when it searches, from pages found by OpenAI's crawler and its search partners. For products, OpenAI adds merchant and third-party data, including reviews. Other sites weigh heavily: in Ahrefs' December 2025 study, "best X" lists were 43.8% of pages ChatGPT cited.
Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your business?
No. OpenAI has tested ads in ChatGPT since February 9, 2026, but says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you". Ads are labelled as sponsored and kept apart from the answer. Be wary of anyone who promises a recommendation: OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.
Can I train ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. Telling ChatGPT about your business shapes your own account through memory and custom instructions; it doesn't change what other people are told. What changes recommendations for everyone is what the web says about you: readable pages, consistent facts and mentions on the sites ChatGPT cites.
Does ChatGPT use Bing to find businesses in 2026?
Partly, as far as OpenAI says. ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to third-party search providers, and OpenAI's help page links to Microsoft's privacy statement for them. It also crawls with its own OAI-SearchBot. Check that Bing has indexed you, but a good Bing ranking doesn't guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation.
How long does it take to get recommended by ChatGPT?
There is no set time, and no guarantee. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register, so access fixes are quick. Earning places on the lists and review sites ChatGPT cites takes months, and new training data arrives only with a new model. Judge the monthly trend.
