How to rank in ChatGPT and AI search in 2026

To rank in ChatGPT and AI search in 2026, make your site easy for AI tools to find, read and quote: let their search crawlers in, answer each question in the first lines of a page, publish facts other sites don't have, and get mentioned on the sites those tools already trust. Then check the answers every month, because nobody can guarantee a citation. OpenAI and Google both say so.

This guide covers how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features choose sources, what recent studies found about the sites they cite, and an eight-step plan for this month. For the background on GEO itself, read our guide to generative engine optimization.

AI answers lean on the same signals as search, so if your site's basics need work, start with what still works in SEO in 2026.

How AI search engines choose their sources in 2026

No AI company publishes its ranking formula. Each one does document which crawler finds pages for its answers, and what keeps a site out.

ChatGPT search

ChatGPT search finds pages with OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's help center says a site becomes eligible when it allows OAI-SearchBot and its host or CDN accepts OpenAI's published IP addresses. Results are ranked using "multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information", and placement is not guaranteed.

ChatGPT-User opens a page when a person's question calls for it and doesn't decide what appears in search. GPTBot collects training data. OpenAI's crawler documentation says each setting is independent, and a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register.

Where does Bing fit? OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends queries to third-party search providers, and its help page points to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies. In September 2026, Tomek Rudzki of Peec AI, an AI search analytics company, published evidence that ChatGPT increasingly answers from an index OpenAI built itself. A good Bing ranking is no promise of a place in ChatGPT.

Perplexity

Perplexity's PerplexityBot is designed "to surface and link websites in search results" and isn't used to collect content for AI models. Perplexity-User visits a page when a user's question needs it and generally ignores robots.txt, since a person asked for the fetch. Changes can take up to 24 hours.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index as Google Search. Google's guide to AI features says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no special optimization, AI text files or schema required. Both features may use "query fan-out", running several related searches across subtopics to build one answer.

The audience is huge: in June 2026, Google said AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion. On October 15 it added more links inside AI answers, covered in our post on the AI Mode links update.

Search Console also has a setting that takes a site out of these AI features, rolled out to every site on August 31, 2026, according to Search Engine Journal. Sites that opt out get no traffic or impressions from them.

Gemini and Microsoft Copilot

The Gemini app follows a separate control. Google's Google-Extended token decides whether content Google crawls may be used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in Gemini Apps. Google says it has no effect on Google Search. For Microsoft, Bing Webmaster Tools has shown since February 2026 how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.

What 2025 and 2026 studies found about who gets cited

Independent studies show correlation, not cause, but several point the same way.

Mentions count more than links

In May 2025, Ahrefs compared 75,000 brands with how often Google's AI Overviews mentioned them. Mentions of the brand across the web had the strongest correlation (0.664). Backlinks were far weaker (0.218).

A top 10 ranking helps less than it did

In March 2026, an Ahrefs analysis of 863,000 searches found that 38% of the pages AI Overviews cited ranked in Google's top 10 for that search, and about 31% sat outside the top 100. Its 2025 figure was 76%, though better tracking makes the two hard to compare. Ahrefs puts it down to fan-out: Google cites pages that do well across related searches. YouTube supplied 5.6% of the citations studied.

The top of the page gets quoted

Kevin Indig analyzed 1.2 million ChatGPT results containing 18,012 citations, Practical Ecommerce reported in March 2026. About 44% of the citations came from the first 30% of a page's text.

ChatGPT now links far more, mostly to homepages

After GPT-6 reached ChatGPT in early October 2026, Peec AI's Tomek Rudzki ran the same 1 million prompts before and after. ChatGPT put a direct link to a website in 42% of answers, up from about 8 to 10%, and 54% of those links pointed to a homepage, according to Search Engine Journal.

One source can disappear overnight

Reddit's share of ChatGPT search citations fell from 3.83% to 0.52% in mid-August 2026, in Promptwatch data reported by Search Engine Journal. Promptwatch called the size of the drop provisional, and OpenAI said ChatGPT still cites Reddit. The lesson: don't build AI visibility on one platform.

AI answers reach for numbers

In an October 2026 experiment, Peec AI researcher Metehan Yesilyurt filled a new site with 50,000 pages of AI-generated statistics he never checked. Google buried it; ChatGPT kept citing it. He warns against publishing anything fake. The takeaway for honest sites: sourced, dated numbers are what AI answers look for.

How to rank in ChatGPT and AI search: a 2026 plan

Most of these steps are good SEO done on purpose.

1. Let the search crawlers in

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for the names in the table. If no rule names them and no User-agent: * group says Disallow: /, they're already allowed. To allow one explicitly, add User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Allow: /. To stay out of training but in search, give GPTBot a Disallow: /.

Then check the layer people forget. OpenAI, Perplexity and Google all say your host or CDN must let their crawlers through, and a firewall's bot protection can block a crawler that robots.txt allows. In Search Console, confirm nobody opted the site out of Google's AI features.

2. Put the answer in the first lines

Write each important page so its first two or three sentences answer the question it exists for, then add the detail. Phrase headings the way people ask, keep one claim per sentence, and put key facts in text, not images. Microsoft's Bing team says clear headings, tables and FAQ sections make content easier for AI systems to reference accurately. Start with the pages that earn money: services, prices, products and booking.

3. Publish facts nobody else has

Google asks for "unique, non-commodity content". For a business, that means facts only you can state: prices, delivery times, service area, test results, survey numbers. Give each number a source and a date. A page that repeats ten other pages gives an AI no reason to pick it.

4. Describe your business the same way everywhere

Use the same name, address, phone number, hours and one-line description on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, social profiles and industry directories. Microsoft says aligning text, images and video so they describe the same entities reduces ambiguity. Local businesses should check the listings ChatGPT uses: OpenAI says ChatGPT can show restaurant availability from OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. Shops should keep Merchant Center current, as Google advises.

5. Get mentioned on the sites AI already trusts

Ahrefs' data points to mentions more than links. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google questions like "best [your service] in [your city]" and note which sites keep appearing: usually review sites, directories, comparison articles, YouTube videos and forums.

Then earn a place on them honestly. Ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms that show up. Send comparison writers facts they can check. Answer questions in communities where you have real expertise, under your own name, and spread the effort across several sources.

6. Add structured data that matches the page

Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, so treat structured data as housekeeping, not a trick. Organization markup helps Google tell your business apart from similar names, and its sameAs property lists your official profiles. Add LocalBusiness, Product or Article where they fit, with every value matching what the page shows.

7. Keep your facts current

An old price or last year's opening hours is an easy way to lose a citation. Update pages when facts change and show the date. Microsoft recommends IndexNow to tell participating search engines a page changed, and Search Console lets you ask Google to recrawl.

8. Measure what AI says about you

  • Search Console's generative AI report, open to every site since August 31, 2026, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device, but no clicks yet.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, with the queries used to find your pages.
  • In analytics, give AI assistants their own channel. ChatGPT tags links with utm_source=chatgpt.com; our post on ChatGPT traffic showing as Direct has the setup.
  • Server logs show which pages OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot read.
  • For the answers themselves, put 20 to 30 buyer questions to each tool monthly and record who is named. Answers vary between runs, so judge the trend.

Watch mentions as closely as clicks. Pew Research Center found in 2025 that Google users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.

How QuQi helps

Checking four AI tools by hand is the step most businesses drop. QuQi's AI Visibility teammate does it every week: it asks Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your buyers ask, and records who is named when you aren't.

Each gap becomes a brief for the Copywriter, who researches it, writes the article in your business's voice and publishes it. The SEO Auditor puts what costs the most traffic first, and the Page Optimizer writes fixes for titles, descriptions and structured data. Every batch runs in a chat you can open and step into, and one switch per kind of work decides whether it goes out on its own or waits for your OK. QuQi can't promise a citation either; it keeps the work going every week. See pricing.

Questions people ask

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in robots.txt and make sure your host or CDN accepts OpenAI's published IP addresses. That makes the site eligible. Being chosen depends on pages that answer clearly, state facts other sites lack and are backed by mentions elsewhere. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google?

ChatGPT uses outside search providers and its own index. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to third-party providers, and its help page names Microsoft and Shopify, not Google. A September 2026 Peec AI analysis found ChatGPT answering more often from an index OpenAI built, so a good Bing ranking is not a ChatGPT citation.

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews in 2026?

Be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search; Google says nothing else is required, not even special markup. AI Overviews then cite pages that do well across many related searches. Ahrefs found in March 2026 that only 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10, so pages that answer specific sub-questions clearly get more chances.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot collects training data, while OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search, and OpenAI treats the two settings separately. You can disallow GPTBot and keep allowing OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what takes you out of ChatGPT's search answers, though OpenAI says a blocked site can still appear as a plain navigational link.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT began testing ads in the US in February 2026 and has since added more countries, but OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Ads are labelled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer. Buying one gets you an ad slot, not a mention in the answer itself.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI search?

No, not for Google. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler pages talk about robots.txt and IP access, not llms.txt. The hours are better spent on clear pages, accurate facts and crawler access.

How long does it take to show up in AI search?

Access changes are quick; citations take longer. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Google can take several days to several months to recrawl a page. Earning mentions on other sites and becoming the page with the best answer is slower, so judge progress over months, not days.
