UTM Builder
Build consistent campaign URLs that do not fragment your analytics.
What it checks
- Adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to your destination URL, plus utm_term and utm_content when you fill them in.
- Keeps the query parameters already on the URL, replaces UTM values that were there before, and removes them when you leave the field empty.
- Lowercases every value unless you turn the option off, so a capital letter cannot split one source into two.
- Names any of the three required parameters that are still missing.
- Encodes spaces and special characters so the link survives being pasted anywhere.
- Collects the URLs you add into a list you can copy as a one-column CSV; the list clears when you leave the page.
Reading the result
Each utm_ parameter becomes a dimension in GA4. Source is who sent the visit (newsletter, linkedin), medium is the kind of channel (email, social, cpc), and campaign is the push it belongs to (spring_launch).
Pick your values once and reuse them. GA4 sorts visits into default channel groups by matching source and medium, so email as the medium lands in the Email channel, while an invented value such as blast can end up as Unassigned. Write your naming rules down and share them with anyone who builds links.
Tag links that bring people in from elsewhere: emails, ads, social posts and partner sites. Do not tag links between your own pages, because UTM values on internal links replace the real source of the visit in your reports.
Questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
This builder treats source, medium and campaign as required, because together they tell you who sent the visit, through which channel and for which campaign. Term and content are optional; use content to tell apart two links in the same email or ad, such as header_cta and footer_cta.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Not on links from other sites and channels. Search engines usually treat the tagged URL as a duplicate of the clean one, and a canonical tag on the page settles it. Keep tagged links out of your own navigation and sitemap.
Is my list of URLs saved?
No. The list lives in the open browser tab and is gone when you reload or leave the page. Copy it as CSV before you close the tab.
Why does a space in my value turn into a plus sign?
URLs cannot contain raw spaces, so the builder encodes them as +, which analytics tools read back as a space. Underscores, as in spring_launch, keep links readable.
