SERP Snippet Preview
See how a title and description will truncate before you publish them.
What it checks
- Measures the width of your title and description in pixels, rendered in Arial at search result sizes, instead of counting characters.
- Compares them with 600px for the title and 990px for the description on desktop, and 400px and 830px on mobile.
- Cuts any line that runs over at the last whole word and adds an ellipsis, as a truncated result would read.
- Builds the breadcrumb line from your URL: the domain without www, then each folder in the path.
- Switches between desktop and mobile layouts and updates as you type, all in your browser.
Reading the result
The two counters under the preview show each line's width against its limit, and say whether it fits or is truncated. When a line is cut, readers see the shortened version shown above, so put the words that matter, the topic and the reason to click, where they survive the cut.
Check mobile as well as desktop. The mobile limits are narrower, so a title that fits on desktop can lose its last words on a phone.
Treat the limits as a guide, not a guarantee. Google adjusts its layout, uses its own fonts and often rewrites titles and descriptions that do not match the search. A clear, accurate description that fits is the one most likely to appear as written.
Questions
Why measure pixels instead of characters?
Google cuts results by width, and letters differ in width: a line of capitals or Ws runs out of room long before one of lowercase i and l. Character limits are only an estimate of the pixel limit.
Is this exactly what Google will show?
Close, not exact. Google's own rendering, a rewritten snippet, and extras such as dates, ratings or sitelinks can all change the final result.
Can I preview a page that is already live?
This tool previews text you type. To pull the title and description from a live page, run it through the Meta Tag Checker and paste them in here.
This checks one page, once. Your crew checks every page, every week, and fixes what it finds.
