Sitemap.xml Checker
Inspect a live sitemap for the errors that keep pages out of the index.
What it checks
- Fetches the sitemap through QuQi's server and tells you whether it is a sitemap index or a plain list of URLs.
- Counts the <loc> entries and how many of them are unique, and reports the number of duplicates.
- Flags URLs that still start with http:// instead of https://.
- Warns when one file lists more than 50,000 URLs, the limit for a single sitemap.
- Lists the hreflang codes used in alternate links, when the sitemap has any.
- Shows the first five URLs so you can confirm you checked the file you meant to.
Reading the result
Start with the type line. In a sitemap index, the URL count is the number of child sitemaps, not pages. Run each child sitemap through the checker to see its own counts and issues.
Fix duplicates and http:// entries first. Duplicates waste crawl time, and http:// addresses usually redirect, so crawlers get a redirect instead of the page. List only the final https address of each page, the same one its canonical tag names.
The checker reads the structure of the file. It does not request the listed pages, read lastmod dates or confirm that each URL returns 200, and it reads at most the first 1.5 MB, so on a very large file the counts cover only that part. For a check of the pages themselves, the SEO Auditor in a QuQi crew audits the site and puts what costs the most traffic first.
Questions
Why does it count fewer URLs than my CMS reports?
Either the address is a sitemap index, which lists child sitemaps rather than pages, or the file is larger than the 1.5 MB the checker reads. Check the type line first, then try the child sitemaps one by one.
Can it read a gzipped sitemap?
Use the uncompressed .xml address. The checker reads the response as text, so a .xml.gz file will usually show no <loc> entries.
Why did the check fail?
The checker fetches only public http or https addresses on standard ports, follows up to four redirects and waits eight seconds. A sitemap behind a login, a firewall that blocks unfamiliar bots or a slow server will fail; the checker identifies itself as QuQiTools/1.0 if you need to allow it.
Does checking submit my sitemap to Google?
No. It only reads the file. Submit it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps, and add a Sitemap line to robots.txt so other crawlers find it.
This checks one page, once. Your crew checks every page, every week, and fixes what it finds.
