Build The Buyer Modifier Matrix
Head terms in most categories are held by marketplaces and national brands and will not move for on-page work. Underneath sits a predictable set of qualifiers buyers add as they narrow down, each with its own result page and its own, often weaker, competitors. The failure is generating every combination mechanically in a spreadsheet, which produces thousands of rows with no search behind them and a plan full of near-duplicate pages.

# Build The Buyer Modifier Matrix
Head terms in most categories are held by marketplaces and national brands and will not move for on-page work. Underneath sits a predictable set of qualifiers buyers add as they narrow down, each with its own result page and its own, often weaker, competitors. The failure is generating every combination mechanically in a spreadsheet, which produces thousands of rows with no search behind them and a plan full of near-duplicate pages.
## What you need first
- the head terms for the category, with the current top ten for each
- a list of attributes you can genuinely honour: price bands, sizes, use cases, integrations, audiences, locations
- the ability to check live SERPs for sampled combinations in the target country
## Method
1. List modifier families separately from the head terms: comparison (vs, alternatives, best), qualification (for a named audience, with a named feature, under a price), stage (cost, how to choose, reviews) and constraint (near me, free, without a named thing).
2. Cross only the families that describe something true about your offer. A price-band row you cannot serve produces a page that ranks briefly and bounces, which is worse than no page.
3. Sample before expanding: take five combinations per family and open the SERP. If a family returns roughly the same results as the bare head term, Google is not treating that modifier as a distinct query and the whole family collapses back into the head term.
4. For families that survive, pull volume across the full cross, then keep every term with measured demand plus the zero-volume terms that name a real attribute of the product.
5. Check who ranks inside each surviving family. Comparison and alternatives pages are usually held by affiliates and editorial sites, so a vendor page may be structurally unable to enter, while the audience-qualified family is normally where vendor pages can rank.
6. Decide the page pattern per family before anything is written: one page per modifier value, or one page covering the family. Splitting too finely creates near-duplicates that compete with each other; merging too far produces a page that serves no intent well.
7. Sequence by proximity to purchase rather than volume. Alternatives and audience-qualified terms usually convert several times better than the informational family on the same site, which changes the order even when volume disagrees.
## What this produces
A modifier matrix with every family validated against a live SERP and a decided page pattern, typically 30 to 80 buildable terms.
## Where this goes wrong
- Publishing the full mechanical cross on volume alone, which fills the site with pages for phrasings nobody uses.
- Building versus-competitor pages in a market where affiliates hold every top-ten slot, so the pages never rank and the effort is remembered as wasted.
- Using a modifier you cannot honour, which wins the click and loses the visitor within seconds.

Use this skill in your own AI
The download is a plain markdown file with the name and trigger in its frontmatter. Where an assistant supports skills it can load itself, that frontmatter is what it reads to decide this one applies.
Claude Code
Save it as ~/.claude/skills/keyword-modifier-matrix/SKILL.md and Claude loads it on its own when what you are doing matches the trigger line. Put it in .claude/skills inside a project instead if the whole team should have it.
Claude
Upload the file in the skills section of your settings. Once it is there it applies itself in any conversation where the trigger fits, so you do not have to remember it exists.
ChatGPT
There is no skills format to install into, so paste the file contents into a Project instruction or a Custom GPT instead. It then applies to every chat in that project rather than only the one you paste it into.
Anything else
Paste the markdown into the chat before your question. It works in any assistant, it just has to be pasted again each time.
Questions about this skill
When do I build a modifier matrix rather than target the head term?
When the head term is held by marketplaces and national brands and will not move for on-page work. Underneath sits a predictable set of qualifiers buyers add as they narrow down, each with its own results and often weaker competitors. The alternative people reach for, generating every combination in a spreadsheet, produces thousands of rows with no search behind them.
What do I need in hand before starting?
The head terms with their current top ten, a list of attributes you can genuinely honour such as price bands, sizes, integrations, audiences and locations, and the ability to check live results in the target country. Cross in a modifier you cannot serve and the page wins the click and loses the visitor in seconds. Skip the SERP sampling and you expand families Google does not treat as distinct queries.
What do I end up with, and which part gets used?
Typically thirty to eighty buildable terms, each inside a family that survived a live SERP check, with a page pattern decided per family. The page pattern is the part that gets used: one page per modifier value, or one page covering the family. Deciding it after writing has started is how you end up with near-duplicates competing against each other.
What is the mistake that ruins this, and what does it cost?
Building versus-competitor and alternatives pages in a market where affiliates and editorial sites hold every top-ten slot. A vendor page is structurally unable to enter there, so the pages never rank and the matrix is remembered as wasted effort. Check who occupies each family first; the audience-qualified family is usually where a vendor page can actually rank.
