Read Intent From The Live SERP

Keyword tools label intent from patterns in the string, not from what Google actually rewards. The obvious approach - trusting the tool's "commercial" or "informational" tag - fails because Google has already decided the answer and shows it in the result types. If eight of ten results are category pages, a blog post will not rank there no matter how good it is.

# Read Intent From The Live SERP

Keyword tools label intent from patterns in the string, not from what Google actually rewards. The obvious approach - trusting the tool's "commercial" or "informational" tag - fails because Google has already decided the answer and shows it in the result types. If eight of ten results are category pages, a blog post will not rank there no matter how good it is.

## What you need first

- a shortlist of candidate queries
- a clean or incognito browser set to the target country
- a note of the page types you are able to produce

## Method

1. Search each query in an incognito window with the location set to your target market, not your office location, because local intent shifts result types entirely.
2. Count the top ten by page type: product, category, comparison, forum, tool, news, editorial. The majority type is the format Google will accept from you.
3. Record which SERP features are present - shopping carousel, People Also Ask, video pack, local pack. A shopping carousel above the fold means organic clicks are already thin.
4. Look for mixed SERPs where no type holds more than five slots. Those are unresolved intent and are the cheapest entries because Google is still testing formats.
5. Check the age and depth of the weakest three results. If any is a thin forum thread or a 2019 listicle, that slot is winnable; if the weakest result is still a well maintained brand page, deprioritise.
6. Tag every query with the required page type and drop any query whose required type you cannot or will not produce.

## What this produces

A keyword list where every term carries a required page type and a winnable or not-winnable verdict based on observed results.

## Where this goes wrong

- Judging the SERP while logged in and personalized, which hides the real result mix.
- Assuming a keyword with a forum result is easy - Reddit and Quora rankings are often the hardest to displace because Google is rewarding the discussion format, not the domain.
- Treating a Featured Snippet as a win target when the query has no click-through left underneath it.

Use this skill in your own AI

The download is a plain markdown file with the name and trigger in its frontmatter. Where an assistant supports skills it can load itself, that frontmatter is what it reads to decide this one applies.

Claude Code Save it as ~/.claude/skills/read-intent-from-live-serps/SKILL.md and Claude loads it on its own when what you are doing matches the trigger line. Put it in .claude/skills inside a project instead if the whole team should have it.
Claude Upload the file in the skills section of your settings. Once it is there it applies itself in any conversation where the trigger fits, so you do not have to remember it exists.
ChatGPT There is no skills format to install into, so paste the file contents into a Project instruction or a Custom GPT instead. It then applies to every chat in that project rather than only the one you paste it into.
Anything else Paste the markdown into the chat before your question. It works in any assistant, it just has to be pasted again each time.

Questions about this skill

When is reading the live SERP the right method rather than trusting the intent label on the export?

When a tool has labelled your list commercial or informational and you are about to commission pages from those labels. The label is inferred from the words in the string; the results show what Google has already decided to reward. If eight of ten results are category pages, an informational label is simply wrong for that query and a blog post will not rank there.

What do I need in hand before starting?

A shortlist of candidate queries, a logged-out browser with the location set to your target market rather than your office, and an honest note of which page types you can actually produce. Skip the location and you read a result page assembled for the wrong country. Skip the page-type note and you tag terms winnable that need a marketplace listing or a tool you have no way to build.

What do I end up with, and which part gets used?

A keyword list where every term carries a required page type and a winnable or not-winnable verdict drawn from observed results. The page type column is the part that gets used, because it decides what gets briefed. The verdict mostly earns its keep by removing terms, and the note on the weakest three results is the evidence you defend each removal with.

What is the mistake that ruins this, and what does it cost?

Judging the results while logged in. Personalisation bends the mix towards what you already read, so you record a page type Google is not serving to your market and brief a full production cycle against it. The related error is reading a Reddit or Quora result as a soft slot; Google is rewarding the discussion format there, which a vendor page cannot supply.
