Social almost always looks worthless in a last-click report, because its real effect runs through branded search, direct traffic and links other people build after seeing your work. Attributing that to a channel with no click is genuinely hard, and most teams either give up or invent a multiplier that flatters them. The honest method is to stop trying to attribute individual sessions and instead look for step changes in leading indicators around bursts of distribution.

# Measure Social Contribution To Search Honestly
Social almost always looks worthless in a last-click report, because its real effect runs through branded search, direct traffic and links other people build after seeing your work. Attributing that to a channel with no click is genuinely hard, and most teams either give up or invent a multiplier that flatters them. The honest method is to stop trying to attribute individual sessions and instead look for step changes in leading indicators around bursts of distribution.
## What you need first
- Search Console access with at least six months of history
- a dated log of your significant social pushes
- a way to segment branded from non-branded queries
## Method
1. Split Search Console queries into branded and non-branded using your brand terms and their misspellings, and chart branded impressions weekly as the primary social indicator.
2. Overlay your dated distribution log on branded impressions and direct sessions, looking for step changes that persist beyond a fortnight rather than the spike on the day.
3. Pull referring domains gained in the 30 days after each significant push - social does not pass ranking signal itself, but it is how the people who build links find you.
4. Run a deliberate quiet period of four to six weeks with no social distribution, and watch whether branded search decays. This is the only cheap approximation of a holdout you will get.
5. Report social as assisted rather than attributed, and state the uncertainty explicitly rather than converting it into a made-up conversion count.
6. Kill the metrics that do not move anything: follower count, impressions, and reach are inputs to nothing you care about unless branded search moves with them.
## What this produces
A branded-search and referring-domain view of social effect, with a documented quiet-period test.
## Where this goes wrong
- reading a same-day traffic spike as the effect, when the durable effect is the slow branded-search lift
- crediting social with rankings directly, since shares are not a ranking factor and that claim will not survive scrutiny
- forgetting that dark social - shares in DMs and private groups - lands in direct traffic, so direct is part of the social measurement, not a separate mystery
