Marketplace And Stockist SERP Share
A brand selling through marketplaces and stockists is competing against its own catalogue data on domains with far more authority, and the shared manufacturer copy means there is nothing to distinguish the pages on. Pulling the listings is rarely possible and usually not commercially sensible. The workable move is deciding product by product where you can realistically win, then putting information on your own pages that a reseller structurally cannot carry.

# Marketplace And Stockist SERP Share
A brand selling through marketplaces and stockists is competing against its own catalogue data on domains with far more authority, and the shared manufacturer copy means there is nothing to distinguish the pages on. Pulling the listings is rarely possible and usually not commercially sensible. The workable move is deciding product by product where you can realistically win, then putting information on your own pages that a reseller structurally cannot carry.
## What you need first
- A query list of product names and model numbers with your current position and the URLs ranking above you
- Margin per channel, so contesting a query can be valued against conceding it
- An inventory of what your own pages can hold that a reseller cannot: the full range, configurators, compatibility data, spare parts, warranty registration
- A list of which marketplace and stockist listings you control the content of
## Method
1. Pull the live SERP for each product name and model number and record who holds the top positions. Model numbers behave differently from product names and often face much weaker competition.
2. Split the queries three ways: ones you already hold, ones held by a site you supply data to, and ones held by reviewers and content sites. The middle group is your own feed outranking you and it is the group with the clearest fix.
3. For contested queries, add what a reseller cannot hold: the complete variant range, fitment and compatibility data, spare parts and consumables, warranty and registration steps.
4. Replace shared manufacturer copy on those pages first. Where your text is identical to a higher-authority reseller there is no reason for any engine to prefer your page.
5. Treat the listings you control as a distribution channel and make sure they carry accurate brand data, rather than fighting a marketplace on ground where authority decides the result.
6. Value each contest before doing the work. Where marketplace margin is close to direct margin, conceding the query and keeping the sale is the correct answer and belongs in the document as a decision rather than a gap.
7. Track share of the top three positions across the whole query set monthly instead of tracking individual ranks, since single product positions move on price and stock events at other retailers.
## What this produces
A per-product decision list covering the product query set, marked contest, differentiate or concede, with the specific page additions for the contested items.
## Where this goes wrong
- Publishing the same manufacturer copy the stockists use and expecting to outrank them on authority you do not have
- Treating every product query as worth winning, when the margin gap between channels does not justify the work on most of them
- Tracking individual product positions, which swing on other retailers' pricing and stock and produce reports nobody can act on
- Answering the problem with brand ad spend alone, which rents the position for as long as the budget runs and leaves the page unchanged

Use this skill in your own AI
The download is a plain markdown file with the name and trigger in its frontmatter. Where an assistant supports skills it can load itself, that frontmatter is what it reads to decide this one applies.
Claude Code
Save it as ~/.claude/skills/marketplace-and-stockist-serp-share/SKILL.md and Claude loads it on its own when what you are doing matches the trigger line. Put it in .claude/skills inside a project instead if the whole team should have it.
Claude
Upload the file in the skills section of your settings. Once it is there it applies itself in any conversation where the trigger fits, so you do not have to remember it exists.
ChatGPT
There is no skills format to install into, so paste the file contents into a Project instruction or a Custom GPT instead. It then applies to every chat in that project rather than only the one you paste it into.
Anything else
Paste the markdown into the chat before your question. It works in any assistant, it just has to be pasted again each time.
Questions about this skill
When is this the right response rather than pulling the listings or buying the position?
When your own product names and model numbers return marketplaces and stockists above your pages. Pulling listings is rarely possible and usually not commercially sensible, and brand ad spend rents the position for as long as the budget runs while leaving the page unchanged. Use this when you need a product by product decision on where you can realistically win.
What do I need before deciding which queries to contest?
A query list of product names and model numbers with your position and the URLs above you, margin per channel, an inventory of what your pages can hold that a reseller cannot, and a list of listings whose content you control. Without margin per channel every query looks worth contesting, and most are not once direct and marketplace margin are compared honestly.
What does the decision list contain, and which page additions matter?
A per product decision list marking each query contest, differentiate or concede, with the page additions for the contested ones. Concede is a genuine verdict and belongs in the document as a decision rather than an open gap. The additions that count are the ones a reseller structurally cannot carry: the full variant range, fitment data, spare parts, warranty registration.
What is the mistake that keeps you below the stockists?
Publishing the same manufacturer copy your stockists use and expecting to outrank them on authority you do not have. Replace the shared text on contested pages before anything else. Tracking individual product positions is the reporting version of the same waste, since they swing on other retailers' pricing and stock; track share of the top three across the set monthly.
