# Internal Link Sculpting

Internal links are the only links you fully control and the fastest lever on a large site, yet most sites distribute them by template accident - nav, breadcrumbs and a related posts widget. The result is that authority pools on the homepage and category pages while the pages meant to convert sit four clicks deep with three internal links each.

## What you need first

- a full crawl with internal inlink counts and click depth per URL
- a list of the pages that actually matter commercially
- the pages that hold the most links or organic traffic, which are your donors

## Method

1. Plot target pages by internal inlinks against their current ranking position and look for the pages with strong intent and single digit inlink counts. That gap is the work.
2. Find donors by taking your highest traffic and most linked pages, then add contextual in body links from those to targets. Body links in the main content outweigh sidebar and footer placements, which templates treat as boilerplate.
3. Vary anchor text naturally across donors but keep it descriptive - internal anchors are one of the few places you can be explicit about a page's topic without risk.
4. Cut internal links to pages you do not want ranking, such as thin tag archives and paginated series, rather than trying to hoard authority with nofollow, which no longer redirects anything.
5. Reduce click depth for target pages to three or fewer from the homepage; depth correlates with crawl frequency, so deep pages also update slowly in the index.
6. Re-crawl after two weeks and confirm the new links are in the rendered HTML, since links injected by client side scripts or hidden behind tabs often do not survive rendering.

## What this produces

A prioritized donor to target internal link plan implemented in body content, with before and after inlink counts.

## Where this goes wrong

- relying on a related posts widget, which links by recency rather than by commercial priority
- using nofollow on internal links in the belief it conserves authority, which it does not
- adding the links in a sidebar module that Google classifies as boilerplate and largely ignores

The download is a plain markdown file with the name and trigger in its frontmatter. Where an assistant supports skills it can load itself, that frontmatter is what it reads to decide this one applies.

Claude Code Save it as ~/.claude/skills/internal-link-sculpting/SKILL.md and Claude loads it on its own when what you are doing matches the trigger line. Put it in .claude/skills inside a project instead if the whole team should have it.
Claude Upload the file in the skills section of your settings. Once it is there it applies itself in any conversation where the trigger fits, so you do not have to remember it exists.
ChatGPT There is no skills format to install into, so paste the file contents into a Project instruction or a Custom GPT instead. It then applies to every chat in that project rather than only the one you paste it into.
Anything else Paste the markdown into the chat before your question. It works in any assistant, it just has to be pasted again each time.

Questions about this skill

When is internal linking the right lever rather than acquiring external links?

When the site already has plenty of content and the pages meant to convert sit four clicks deep with three internal links each. These are the only links you fully control and they ship this week rather than next quarter. On a thin site there are no donor pages to link from, and external acquisition is the honest answer instead.

What do I need in hand before starting?

A full crawl with internal inlink counts and click depth per URL, the list of pages that matter commercially, and your donors, meaning the pages holding the most links or organic traffic. Without inlink counts you cannot see the gap, and without the commercial list you will reinforce whatever the template already links to most, which is the current problem.

What do I end up with, and which part gets used?

A prioritised donor to target plan implemented as contextual links in body content, with before and after inlink counts. Body placement is the part that carries the weight. The same links added to a sidebar or footer module get treated as boilerplate and largely ignored, which produces the counts without the effect and reads later as internal linking not working.

What most often ruins this, and what does it cost?

Adding links that never survive rendering, injected by client side script or hidden behind tabs, so recrawl after two weeks and confirm they are in the rendered HTML. The other is nofollowing internal links to conserve authority, which has not worked since Google changed nofollow handling in 2009. Cut links to thin tag archives instead.
