The Disavow Decision
Disavow is the most over used tool in SEO. Google ignores the overwhelming majority of spam links on its own, so for a site with no manual action a disavow file usually changes nothing at best - and at worst removes links that were quietly helping, because people paste in whole domains they simply did not recognize. The correct default answer is no.
Use when someone wants to upload a disavow file and you need to decide whether that helps, does nothing, or actively hurts.
The skill file
What you need first
- the Manual Actions report in Search Console
- the audited linking domain table with acquisition tags
- an honest account from the client of what has been paid for historically
Method
- 01 Check Manual Actions first. If there is no unnatural links penalty, the bar for disavowing is very high and you should be looking for a different cause of the traffic problem.
- 02 If there is no penalty, ask one question: did this site or its vendors buy or build these links? Algorithmic devaluation means spam you did not build is already discounted, so cleaning it up buys you nothing.
- 03 Where you do proceed, disavow at domain level not URL level - link spam regenerates on new URLs on the same host, so a URL list is stale within days.
- 04 Never disavow a domain you cannot explain. Go through the file line by line and delete anything you added because it looked foreign, had a low authority score, or you did not recognize the brand.
- 05 Keep the file in version control with a dated comment per block explaining why each set went in, because in two years nobody will remember and someone will want to reverse it.
- 06 Upload, then wait for the links to be recrawled before judging anything - effects follow Google recrawling each linking page, which takes months, not the upload itself.
What this produces
Either a documented decision not to disavow, or a domain level disavow file where every entry has a stated reason.
Where this goes wrong
- disavowing by authority score, which reliably removes legitimate small blogs and forums
- submitting a URL level file against link spam that regenerates on new paths
- treating disavow as a recovery tactic for a ranking drop with no manual action, which wastes months you could spend on content

The download is a plain markdown file with the name and trigger in its frontmatter. Where an assistant supports skills it can load itself, that frontmatter is what it reads to decide this one applies.
Questions about this skill
When is disavowing the right answer rather than looking for another cause?
Realistically only when Search Console shows an unnatural links manual action, or when the site or its vendors built the links themselves. Without a penalty the default is no: algorithmic devaluation already discounts spam you did not build, so the file buys nothing while you spend months not investigating the real reason traffic fell.
What do I need in hand before starting?
The Manual Actions report, the audited linking domain table with acquisition tags, and an honest account from the client of what has been paid for over the years. Starting without that history is exactly how people disavow domains they simply did not recognise, and some of those were earning links. You cannot tell bought from earned by looking at a URL.
What do I end up with, and which part gets used?
Either a documented decision not to disavow, or a domain level file where every entry has a stated reason, held in version control with a dated comment per block. The reasons are the part that gets used later. In two years someone will want the file reversed, and without the notes nobody can say which blocks were safe to pull out.
What most often ruins this, and what does it cost?
Disavowing by authority score. It strips out small blogs and forums, which are the links a modest site earns honestly, and there is no quick way back: any effect follows Google recrawling every linking page, which takes months in both directions. Filing URL level entries is the other one, since link spam regenerates on new paths within days.
