# The Disavow Decision

Disavow is the most over used tool in SEO. Google ignores the overwhelming majority of spam links on its own, so for a site with no manual action a disavow file usually changes nothing at best - and at worst removes links that were quietly helping, because people paste in whole domains they simply did not recognise. The correct default answer is no.

## What you need first

- the Manual Actions report in Search Console
- the audited linking domain table with acquisition tags
- an honest account from the client of what has been paid for historically

## Method

1. Check Manual Actions first. If there is no unnatural links penalty, the bar for disavowing is very high and you should be looking for a different cause of the traffic problem.
2. If there is no penalty, ask one question: did this site or its vendors buy or build these links? Algorithmic devaluation means spam you did not build is already discounted, so cleaning it up buys you nothing.
3. Where you do proceed, disavow at domain level not URL level - link spam regenerates on new URLs on the same host, so a URL list is stale within days.
4. Never disavow a domain you cannot explain. Go through the file line by line and delete anything you added because it looked foreign, had a low authority score, or you did not recognise the brand.
5. Keep the file in version control with a dated comment per block explaining why each set went in, because in two years nobody will remember and someone will want to reverse it.
6. Upload, then wait for the links to be recrawled before judging anything - effects follow Google recrawling each linking page, which takes months, not the upload itself.

## What this produces

Either a documented decision not to disavow, or a domain level disavow file where every entry has a stated reason.

## Where this goes wrong

- disavowing by authority score, which reliably removes legitimate small blogs and forums
- submitting a URL level file against link spam that regenerates on new paths
- treating disavow as a recovery tactic for a ranking drop with no manual action, which wastes months you could spend on content
