Reach Audiences You Have Not Built

Building an audience from zero takes longer than the piece stays relevant, so the only fast route is borrowing one. The standard pitch, offering a guest post or availability for a podcast, fails because it asks for the host's audience while offering something the host can already get from twenty other people. This works only when you hold material the host cannot source elsewhere: your own numbers, a failure you can describe honestly, or a position most of the field disagrees with.

# Reach Audiences You Have Not Built

Building an audience from zero takes longer than the piece stays relevant, so the only fast route is borrowing one. The standard pitch, offering a guest post or availability for a podcast, fails because it asks for the host's audience while offering something the host can already get from twenty other people. This works only when you hold material the host cannot source elsewhere: your own numbers, a failure you can describe honestly, or a position most of the field disagrees with.

## O que precisa primeiro

- three to five things only you can say: proprietary data, a project that went wrong, a contrarian result you can defend
- a list of newsletters, podcasts and creators whose audience overlaps yours, with rough audience size
- a specific destination page that survives a traffic spike, not a homepage

## Método

1. Rank candidates by audience overlap rather than size. Eight hundred of the right people beats forty thousand of the wrong ones, and the smaller host is far more likely to say yes.
2. Check what each host has covered in the last six months before pitching. Repeating a topic they just ran is the most common rejection reason and takes two minutes to rule out.
3. Open the pitch with the material, not with yourself. A pitch that leads with your job title asks for a favour; one that leads with the finding offers one.
4. Offer the format that costs the host least: a written answer, a data cut they can publish, a segment they can edit down. Anything that requires them to build around you gets deferred indefinitely.
5. Go in with one thing you want remembered and say it more than once, because an audience retains roughly one idea from an appearance and it will not be your company name.
6. Give the host something worth linking to - the dataset, the method, the full write-up - since a homepage link converts badly and is often stripped as promotional.
7. Log every appearance with its date, because most of these produce no measurable referral click and only show up later as branded search you cannot otherwise explain.

## O que isto produz

A booked run of appearances with a distinct angle each, plus a dated log to overlay on branded search later.

## Onde isto corre mal

- sending one generic paragraph to twenty hosts, which is obvious on sight and burns the whole list at once
- accepting whatever invitations arrive, so your time goes to the easiest shows rather than the ones your buyers listen to
- pointing the audience at a homepage instead of the specific thing you spent an hour talking about
