Validate Reported Volume Against Reality

Reported volume is a modelled twelve-month average, rounded into buckets and often aggregated across close variants, so a single figure can be out by a factor of two or more in either direction. Plans built on it fail quietly: pages get commissioned for terms with no real traffic, and terms the tool under-reports never make the list. You cannot fix the model, but you can measure how wrong it is for your own market and adjust for it.

# Validate Reported Volume Against Reality

Reported volume is a modelled twelve-month average, rounded into buckets and often aggregated across close variants, so a single figure can be out by a factor of two or more in either direction. Plans built on it fail quietly: pages get commissioned for terms with no real traffic, and terms the tool under-reports never make the list. You cannot fix the model, but you can measure how wrong it is for your own market and adjust for it.

## Qué necesitas antes

- Search Console impressions by query for terms where you already rank in the top three, 12 months, country matched to the tool setting
- reported volume for those same terms from the one tool you will use throughout
- optionally, a small exact-match paid search budget for unproven terms that carry real money

## Método

1. Sample only queries where you rank consistently in the top three, because at those positions impressions approximate total searches. Lower down, impressions are throttled by position and say nothing about demand.
2. Compare twelve months of impressions against twelve times the reported monthly volume, and record the ratio rather than the difference, so terms of very different sizes stay comparable.
3. Take the median ratio as the correction factor for this tool, country and vertical. Expect a consistent bias in one direction; a scatter with no centre means the sample is too small or mixes several markets.
4. Check whether the bias varies by volume band. Tools are usually closest on high-volume head terms and worst below a few hundred a month, which is where most of a real plan sits.
5. For unproven terms carrying budget, buy them on exact match for a fortnight and read the impression count. It is the only direct measurement available and costs less than a wrongly commissioned content programme.
6. Apply the factor to the plan and write it next to the numbers rather than folding it in silently, so a reader can see the adjustment instead of discovering it later.
7. Re-derive the factor whenever the tool, country or vertical changes, because it does not transfer across any of the three.

## Qué produce esto

A documented volume correction factor for your tool and market, with the sampled terms and ratios kept so anyone can reproduce it.

## Dónde falla esto

- Sampling terms where you rank fifth or lower, which measures your own click curve rather than the demand behind the query.
- Comparing a tool figure set to one country against Search Console data covering every country, which manufactures a bias that is not there.
- Assuming exact match in a paid account is exact - close variants are matched by default and inflate the reading unless you exclude them.
