# Sequence the First Quarter on a Site With No Authority

Methods that rank by current position or historical CTR cannot run without history, so planning falls back to search volume and the first quarter gets spent on head terms that will not rank for a year. The first quarter has a different job: getting enough pages ranked somewhere that Google can classify what the site is about, and producing the first evidence of what it will let you win. This applies to new domains, a new subfolder in an unrelated topic, and sites that lost their history in a migration.

## What you need first

- a single statement of the one topic the site should be known for first
- a query list including long tail and question phrasings, validated against live SERPs rather than tool volumes
- confirmation the site is indexable and that at least one page has been crawled
- honest weekly throughput for the first 12 weeks

## Method

1. Pick one topic and refuse the others for the quarter. A new domain spread across three topics gives Google nothing to classify it as, and that classification is what this quarter buys.
2. Build the commercial page the topic points at before any supporting content. Supporting pages published first have nowhere authoritative to link, and nobody goes back to add those links later.
3. Choose launch queries by SERP composition rather than volume. Results pages containing forums, aggregators or pages more than about three years old are SERPs that do not require a strong domain.
4. Reject any query whose top 10 is entirely national brands, however relevant it is commercially. Pages published against those in month one get no impressions, and a page with no impressions teaches you nothing.
5. Publish in tight thematic runs of three to five interlinked pages rather than one page each across the map. A run is a coherent signal; scattered singles read as noise.
6. From week 6 read impressions rather than clicks in Search Console. Impressions on queries you did not target are the first real evidence of how Google is classifying the site, and they should redirect the second half of the quarter.
7. Hold the head terms in a named phase two with an explicit entry condition, such as a referring domain count or any page reaching the top 20. Naming the condition ends the recurring argument about why the obvious term is not being targeted yet.

## What this produces

A 12 week publication order covering one topic, with the commercial anchor page first, thematic runs after it, and a written entry condition for the deferred head terms.

## Where this goes wrong

- targeting the head term in month one because the business asked for it, producing pages with neither impressions nor diagnostic value
- hedging across several topics, which delays Google classifying the site and makes every later cluster harder than it needed to be
- judging the quarter on clicks when impressions on unexpected queries are the only usable signal this early
